Understanding the Double Reading Workflow

IntelePACS can be configured to support diagnosis by two radiologists. For example, specific exams, such as mammographies, can be assigned two readers. The Acquisition Traffic Controller (ATC) assigns these exams through their faciilty's third-party RIS.

The double reading workflow is only available for reports dictated using a Multi-Method Reporting (MMR) system .

In the double reading workflow, the ATC assigns two radiologists to a case before the final report is sent out. The first reader is the dictating radiologist and the second reader is the reviewing radiologist.

To use this feature, ask your PACS administrator to enable the Dictating Reports and Reporting Worklist privileges in your user account.

The first reader opens the report for dictation from the Ready tab in the Reporting worklist. The Second Reader column displays the name of the second reader who is assigned to review the report.

After the first reader dictates and signs their report, it is removed from his or her worklist and is sent to the second reader's Double Reads worklist.

Second Reader Assigned to Double Read

The second reader sees the report in his or her Double Reads tab in the Reporting worklist. The report to review is indicated with a Second read status in the Required Action column. The second reader has access to the images, prior reports, and patient history.

If a report is co-signed by the second reader with a concurrent score, it becomes final.

If a discrepancy is found in the report, the second reader edits the report and provides a score and comments, and if needed, changes the diagnostic code before signing it. The report is re-assigned to the first reader to review and co-sign. The report is displayed in the first reader's Double Reads worklist with an Approval of edits status in the Required Action column. After the report is co-signed by the first reader, it becomes final.

First reader must approve report

The first reader will receive an email notification when a report dictated by him or her has been closed by the quality committee.

Your PACS administrator can configure which first readers will receive an email notification to approve a review performed by a second reader. The email contains a link to the Peer Review portal where the first reader can see the original report and the score given by the second reader. The first reader cannot approve the report from the Peer Review portal. The first reader can launch InteleViewer from the Peer Review portal to review the changes and co-sign the report. For more information on customizing the Peer Review template and configuring notifications, see the IntelePACS Administrator Guide.
