About Opening Studies and Series

In a typical radiological workflow, the studies that a physician views are preselected by worklist software or by a person who assigns studies. You can open a specific study, series, or multiple studies and series to view them, manipulate the images for review, and view reports. All studies with the same accession number (in other words, belonging to the same order) appear in the thumbnails. If your workflow uses grouped procedures or linked orders, the procedures may appear split if they belong to different studies depending on how your system is configured. Your study may also include orphan studies—studies that have images (including thumbnails) but no matching orders.

You can configure the sort order in which grouped procedure studies are displayed in the Studies list and the Thumbnail strip. For information about setting the sort order, see Order the grouped procedure studies .

You can view images available on the IntelePACS (online) or archived to tape or an external PACS (offline). In the case of offline images, you can retrieve and view them once they are online. You can also view images regardless of whether they are available on your workstation (local), a DICOM server (remote), or exported by using the standard DICOMDIR. Unsupported file types appear as blank images in InteleViewer.

To open remote studies, the DICOM Query feature must be enabled. You do not need the DICOM Query feature to open studies from the IntelePACS.

To open new images without disturbing your pre-existing work, you can open them in a new window. When images are opened, InteleViewer automatically searches for all relevant studies for the selected patient, and lists them in the Patient menu.

If you have access to key images, teaching cases, and teaching collections, you open these as you would any other study.

To use these features, ask your PACS administrator to enable the appropriate privileges in your user account.
